Caro-Kann Defense: Maróczy Variation
The Maróczy Variation, also known as the Fantasy Variation, answers the Caro-Kann's ...d5 with 3.f3. White wants a full pawn center. If Black takes on e4, the f-pawn recaptures, White has pawns on d4 and e4 side by side, and the f-file is half-open. The price is development: f3 takes the g1 knight's usual square and leaves the king's diagonals looser.

Key moves
1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. f3
- 3. f3The f-pawn guards e4 so that ...dxe4 can be met by fxe4, keeping two central pawns. White accepts slower kingside development as the price of that pawn support.
Striking at once with ...dxe4 and ...e5
After 3...dxe4 4.fxe4, Black's most direct plan is 4...e5, hitting d4 before White can support it with pieces. If White develops with Nf3 and lets the d4 pawn go, the bishop can come to c4 and point at f7, and the half-open f-file adds to that pressure. Black then has extra material to hold and a king still in the center.
Keeping the tension with ...e6
Black can also refuse to release the center with 3...e6, reinforcing d5 and leaving White to decide what to do about the tension. After Nc3, ...Bb4 pins the knight to the king, so it no longer really guards e4. The cost of this plan is the familiar one: the c8 bishop is now behind the e6 pawn.
Since the knight cannot go to f3 yet, White's king knight often develops to e2 or waits until fxe4 frees the f3 square again.

Questions
Why does White not just play 3.Nc3 instead?
After 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4, White recaptures with a piece and the center has only a d4 pawn. 3.f3 is for players who want to recapture with a pawn and keep two of them in the middle.
