French Defense: Exchange Variation
In the Exchange Variation White releases the central tension at once with 3.exd5. Black normally recaptures with the e-pawn, and the pawn structure becomes symmetrical, with pawns on d4 and d5 and an open e-file between the kings. The trade also hands Black something the French rarely offers this early: a free diagonal for the c8 bishop.

Key moves
1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. exd5
- 3. exd5White trades on d5 instead of pushing or defending. For one move White is a pawn up, but Black takes back at once. The capture removes the e4 pawn that Black's whole setup was built to attack, and after ...exd5 the e-file is open for both sides.
A freed light-squared bishop
After ...exd5, the e6 pawn is gone and the c8 bishop can reach f5, g4 or e6. In most French lines that bishop stays boxed in for a long time, so this is a real gain for Black. White's own c1 bishop is free too, which is why development usually comes quickly on both sides.
Mirror pawns, different plans
With identical pawns, the game turns on piece activity. Bishops often land on d3 and d6, knights on f3 and f6, and rooks on the open e-file. A pin along the e-file, or a quick Bg5 or ...Bg4 against a knight, can matter a lot when the pawns are identical.
Either side can change the picture with c4 or ...c5. That push gives the pawn on d4 or d5 a chance to become isolated, and it trades the symmetry for open lines and piece play.
Symmetry after castling
3... exd5 4. Nf3 Nf6 5. Bd3 Bd6 6. O-O O-O
Both sides have developed the same pieces to the same squares. From here a typical idea is Bg5 or ...Bg4 to pin the knight on f6 or f3, or a rook to e1 or e8 to contest the open file.

Questions
Can Black recapture with the queen?
Yes, ...Qxd5 is legal and keeps the pawns unbalanced, but the queen stands in the center where Nc3 can gain time against her. Taking with the pawn is the standard reply.
