Sicilian Defense: French Variation
The French Variation is Black's 2...e6, a quiet pawn move with long reach. It covers d5 and f5, frees the bishop on f8, and keeps every knight move in reserve. Because nothing is fixed yet, Black can steer toward several different Sicilian families depending on how White continues, and ...d5 stays available as a break.

Key moves
1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 e6
- 2... e6The pawn on e6 guards d5, so a later ...d5 has backing, and it lets the f8 bishop out to e7 or d6. Once the c-pawn trades on d4, c5 and b4 open up for the bishop as well.
Against 3.c3 and 3.Bc4
If White prepares d4 with 3.c3, the e6 pawn makes 3...d5 natural. Black strikes at e4 at once, and after a trade on d5 Black can recapture with the e-pawn.
3.Bc4 runs into a pawn that already blocks the c4-f7 diagonal. Black can follow with ...d5, or with ...a6 and ...b5 to push the bishop around.
White's d3 and g3 setup
Some White players skip the open center and set up with d3, g3, Bg2 and castling. This is the King's Indian Attack, and against ...e6 and ...d5 it leads to French-style structures where White pushes e5 and turns toward the black king.
When White opens with 3.d4
After 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4, Black picks a branch on move four: ...a6 for the Kan, ...Nc6 for the Taimanov, or ...Nf6 and ...d6 for the Scheveningen.

d4 leads every band. Bc4 sits second in the three bands below 1600, and from 1800 up c3 enters the top three.

Questions
Does 2...e6 lead to a French Defense?
Not by itself. The pawn sits on e6 as in the French, but with the c-pawn already on c5 the play stays Sicilian. French-like structures appear mainly when White sets up with d3 and Black answers with ...d5.
