A practical anti-blunder routine
Catch the threat before you calculate the plan.
Most blunders are not cured by calculating ten moves farther. They are prevented by looking at the right things before committing: what changed, what is forcing, what is loose, and what the opponent would play if given one free move.
Read the last move
Ask what it attacked, defended, opened, closed, or left behind before returning to your own plan.
Scan forcing moves
Checks, captures, and direct threats narrow the board quickly and reveal many one-move tactical problems.

Begin with what the opponent's move changed
Treat the last move as new information. A bishop move may attack a pawn, uncover a rook, remove a defender, or vacate a square for the queen. If you jump straight back to your own plan, you are analyzing an outdated position.
A useful question is: if the opponent could move again immediately, what would they do? That turns a vague feeling of danger into a concrete threat you can accept, prevent, or answer with something stronger.

Use checks, captures, and threats as a scan, not a slogan
List forcing moves for the opponent first, then for yourself. You do not need to calculate every one deeply. Reject impossible or obviously bad moves quickly, but make sure the dangerous candidates actually entered the list.
The order matters because an attractive attacking idea is irrelevant if the opponent already has a checkmate, a winning capture, or a tempo attack on your queen. Safety creates permission to plan.
Track loose and overloaded pieces
A loose piece has no defender or an unreliable one. An overloaded piece is responsible for more than one important job. Count attackers and defenders, but also ask whether a defender is pinned, can be deflected, or must protect the king.
Badges and arrows can help during study, but the over-the-board habit is visual: scan each occupied square, then look along the lines connecting valuable pieces. Forks, skewers, discovered attacks, and removal-of-defender tactics often begin with this inventory.
Separate candidate generation from calculation
First choose two or three moves worth calculating. Then test the opponent's most forcing reply after each. Mixing these stages leads to long calculation on the first attractive move while a safer or stronger candidate never enters consideration.
A candidate can be included because it is forcing, necessary, positionally useful, or simply the move you want to test. It does not need to be good yet. The comparison stage is where weak candidates are removed.
Perform a final safety check
After choosing a move, imagine the piece on its destination square and the origin square empty. Scan checks, captures, and direct threats one more time. This catches the blunders created by your own move: a newly loose queen, an opened back rank, a blocked escape square, or a defender that moved away.
The final check should be short and consistent. When time is low, simplify the routine rather than abandoning it: opponent check, opponent capture, hanging piece, move.
Review blunders as recurring patterns
After the game, classify the miss by its cause: ignored last move, missed forcing reply, loose piece, calculation stopped too soon, or evaluation error. The engine score describes the damage; the category tells you what habit to train.
If the same category appears several times, turn it into the next game's cue. Improvement is easier to measure when the target is “notice the moved defender” rather than “do not blunder.”

Why do I still blunder after doing tactics puzzles?
Puzzles announce that a tactic exists. Games do not. Add a consistent threat and loose-piece scan so tactical patterns are considered in ordinary positions too.
Should I calculate every check and capture?
Notice each legal forcing move, then dismiss clearly irrelevant ones quickly. The goal is to prevent a dangerous reply from being invisible, not to spend equal time on every check.
What is the fastest blunder check for time trouble?
Look for the opponent's checks, captures, and attacks on undefended pieces after your intended move. It is incomplete, but much safer than moving instantly.
Can an engine tell me why I blundered?
An engine can reveal the refutation and the size of the evaluation swing. A useful explanation must still connect that line to the board fact and decision habit that caused the miss.
